Inspired by her children, this researcher became a leader in climate action

In celebration of International Women’s Day, we chatted with Dr Heidi Edmonds, Senior Researcher at Beyond Zero Emissions (BZE). Heidi spearheads BZE’s collaborative research, leading components of BZE’s Renewable Energy Industrial Precinct project, including for her hometown of Gladstone in Central Queensland.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your educational and professional background.

My undergraduate degree was in chemical engineering, but I later went into the field of environmental engineering, ecology and biodiversity protection via postgraduate studies focused on spatial analysis and urban ecosystems.

Q: Why did you choose to work in the energy and climate action space and what do you love about your job?

My young children inspired me to step up in my leadership on climate action and energy. Spending time outdoors with them, I experienced the ambient heat and felt the urgency to act on climate change. I undertook freelance climate solutions research and writing, co-founded Parents for Climate and joined BZE in a role focused on research and stakeholder engagement.

I love working with passionate, smart people and enjoy using my technical and communication skills to make climate solutions accessible. It’s exciting to see BZE’s recommendations taken up by government and industry.

Q: What are some insights on the energy transition based on your engagements on the ground in Central Queensland?

Coordination across sectors and industries is critical. We need to plan systematically and strategically to get the best outcomes for people, nature, and our economy. BZE’s National Action Plan (currently in development) explores how nationally coordinated action focused on the highest-impact initiatives will help us cut emissions fast.

Q: What advice would you give to women considering careers in cleantech and the renewable energy industries?

There are diverse roles available in cleantech and renewable energy. My advice is to know what you would like to contribute and follow a path to get there. It may take a few different turns, and you may have different options to pursue. Make it work for you.
